Chapter Eighteen

Karma landed early at Logan International Airport and rented a car, then headed to the Boston safe house.

She bumped down the historic cobblestone streets, shocked to find a gaping hole where the safe house had once been.

What had happened? She didn’t remember seeing anything about it on the news, just nonstop reports of the attack on Selena’s grave.

She headed to the cemetery, memories of Selena’s funeral rising to the surface of her mind.

Hugh had laid in the healing sleep for six months. They’d had to make all of Selena’s arrangements without his input, unsure if they would be making his too.

Dale had been beside himself. Karma had blessed him ten times over, trying to help the man, who already had some significant mental health issues. He refused to leave his brother’s side.

They all pressed on, with heavy hearts. Jacob tended Hugh day and night, while Desdemona and Cyrille had taken over most of the planning.

When Hugh awakened, he’d tried to kill himself, several times. His recovery had been long and arduous.

Karma sighed and glanced up at the sign for Forest Hills Cemetery. A large swath of it had been cordoned off.

“Sorry,” the officer told her. “Off limits to the public. We’ve had hazmat people in there for days.”

With a little luck, she managed to slip in after dark and find her way to the site. She was immune to Nightshade’s poison; most energy shifters were to some extent.

It did not take long to locate the woman’s noxious presence near the “Garden of Enduring Love.” The entire area had been fenced off and warning signs put up. Heavy equipment had been moved in.

Karma had no idea how authorities planned to deal with that mess, but she wasn’t getting any closer to it without putting in a lot of effort. Not that she needed to.

Nightshade’s karma reeked to the high heavens, like rotten eggs, telling her everything she needed to know.

There was another presence that lingered here too. She didn’t recognize the signal, but whoever it was had karma even nastier than Nightshade’s. How was that possible?

It smelled like decaying flesh, like murder many times over.

The Furies would want to know about that one, if she could find them.

They worked with karma too, the darkest kinds. They were part fire shifter, part energy shifter, and all bad ass. No one bossed them around or pissed them off. They belonged to the Phoenix safe house, but kept to themselves, dwelling in the mountains of the Southwest, hunting mankind’s—and Superkind’s—worst offenders: murderers, child molesters, and others. The Furies had been the deadliest of Rogue Hunters back in the day, helping Hugh and his team wipe out a slew of them.

She would not be surprised to see them again soon.

A wave of sorrow washed over Karma as she studied the grave site. Selena was the last person who deserved such treatment. Her karma had smelled like flowers and sunshine, because in essence, that what she was. How could anyone not love her?

Karma waved her arms over the entire area, blessing it with luck, and joy, and every good thing at her command.
